‘The kaleidoscopic conditions’ of John Akomfrah’s Stuart Hall

The Unfinished Conversation – and the extended cinema release, Stuart Hall Project is, on one hand, a continuation of Akomfrah’s engagement with iconic black public figures (Days Hope March Martin Luther King; Wonderful World Louis Armstrong; Mariah Carey: Billion Dollar Babe; Urban Soul: Making Modern R&B). Unlike conceptual approach in those films though, are dialectical sum two major thinkers’ ideas. Focusing Hall’s life work, incorporate what termed ‘the kaleidoscopic conditions blackness’ into their aesthetic design. This article engages closely release to explore mode analysis, analysing films’ decentring wider social narratives, which, I argue, seamlessly interwoven both design montage analytic methods work field Cultural Studies.
